Iceland is a volcanically and geologically active island. It has many volcanoes and eruptive fault zones, about 130 being active. Eyjaföll volcano (the white area at lower center) erupted in 2010 and caused a major disruption to air travel across Europe. Another large eruption occured in 2011. This time, it was the Grímsvötn volcano, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes located on the Vatnajökull ice-cap (the large white area at right).
