The Syr Darya river flows through part of Central Asia to the Aral Sea. Along its course, the river plays a major part in cotton field irrigation of Kazakhstan.

This satellite image is taken in South Kazakhstan, not far from the Uzbekistan border. Fields irrigated by the Syr Darya make a very graphic patchwork, whose regular patterns are shaken by the river meanders.
